Public Safety Tips:

From time to time, all communities deal with some form of criminal activity. While people typically look to the police to solve crime, the reality is everyone has a role in keeping a community safe. There are three elements a criminal must possess for a crime to occur: desire, ability and opportunity.
Eliminate just one of these elements, and no crime will take place. You have no control over the first two elements, but you can eliminate the third element –opportunity.
Walk Smart

Walk places with friends, rather than alone.

Stay on a well-traveled street and avoid short cuts.

Carry your purse close to your body.

Don’t display cash or other items of value.

If you think you’re being followed, switch directions or cross the street. If they’re still there, move quickly to a store, restaurant or busy area and ask for help.

If you need to work late, make sure there are others in the building and that someone – a security guard or supervisor – will wait with you or walk you to your car.

Always be alert and aware of your surroundings.

Avoid areas with limited visibility or poor lighting.

Don’t overload yourself with large or heavy items.

Vehicle and Parking Garage Safety

When walking to your vehicle, have your keys ready to unlock the door.

Don’t park next to a van’s sliding door.

Wear shoes that will allow you to walk quickly, in the event of an emergency.

Look around your vehicle for any suspicious activity. If someone is loitering around your vehicle, walk past until they leave.

Do a quick scan of your vehicle’s interior, including the back seat, before unlocking the door.

Don’t leave valuables in plain view in your car.

Always lock car doors and take your keys when you leave your vehicle.

Always park in a well-lit area.

Close car windows completely when leaving your vehicle.

If you notice someone following you when you are driving, drive to the nearest, busiest, brightly lit area and call 911.
